Qatar Gas Borrows $1.5 Billion for Korean LNG Tankers (Update1)

Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Qatar Gas Transport Co., the liquefied natural gas shipper known as Nakilat, agreed to $1.5 billion of loans from Korea Export Insurance Corp. and 12 banks to help pay for 25 tankers it's ordered from South Korean shipyards.

The debt comprises $1.05 billion of 17-year loans and a $450 million 12-year facility backed by Korea Export, Nakilat said today in a filing to the Doha Securities Market, without saying what interest the loans will pay.

The company's Nakilat Inc. unit plans to borrow a further $1 billion over the next 18 months to make payments on the tankers, which are being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co., the statement said.

Nakilat Managing Director Muhammad Ghannam in March said the company plans to operate the world's largest LNG fleet by 2010 because Qatar is the world's biggest LNG producer and plans to produce 77 million tons of the fuel a year by that time. LNG is natural gas chilled to liquid for transportation by tankers to destinations not connected by pipelines.

Nakilat expects to start receiving the tankers this year and has chartered them all on 25-year contracts to state-backed domestic companies including Qatar Liquefied Natural Gas Co. and Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Co., according to the statement.

The total cost of the tankers will be about $7.5 billion, Fitch ratings said in a July 18 report.

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group advised Nakilat on its latest borrowing, the statement said, without identifying the group of lenders.
